LIBRARIES IN PRISONS
RSSLWD extended its mission of opening libraries to Jails in the year 2012 to bring positivity and creativity in the monotonous lives of jail inmates. With the financial support of BIMTECH, it has already established “BIMTECH Pustakalaya” in eleven prisons. The first library was established in Ghaziabad on 17th March 2012. Libraries are also established in Jails of Lucknow, Greater Noida, Aligarh, Meerut, Agra, Bulandsher, Etawah, Firozabad, and Mathura.
Development in various jails of Uttar Pradesh is impacting the lives of jail inmates positively. Books are selected by eminent scholars of library science after a detailed survey conducted of the jail inmates. These libraries have helped to divert their mind from the pressure and tension into fun and relaxation. It develops the mind as well as makes us innovative.
District Jail, Ghaziabad: the First library was established in Ghaziabad on 17th March 2012. Libraries started with four thousand (4000) books.
District Jail, Lucknow: the second library was established in Lucknow on 25th May 2013 with 3000 (Three thousand books). The library was inaugurated by Shri Rajesh Pratap Singh, ADC and with Shri Dadhiram Morya (superintendent) Ranganathan society donated around 2500 books, 4 computers, 10 cupboards, table, chairs and CD/DVDs to the library.
District Jail, Gautam Budh Nagar (Male Wing), Greater Noida: Third Library was established in Gautam Buddh Nagar (Male Wing) in 29th May 2014. Libraries Started with 2500 (Two thousand five hundred) Books. The library was inaugurated by Dr. Preetender Singh (SSP). On this occasion, NGO donated around 2500 books, 4 computers, 10 Cupboards, table, chairs and CD/DVDs to the library.
District Jail, Aligarh: the 4th library was established in Aligarh. Libraries started with 2000 books and was inaugurated on 27th March 2017 by Dr. Sharad Kulshreshtha, D.I.G. (Prisons –Agra Range), along with Superintendent Aligarh Jail.
District Jail, Meerut: the 5th library was established in Meerut Jail with 2100 books with support from Raja Ram Mohan Roy Library Foundation (RRRLF) on 24th April 2017. The library was inaugurated by Sh. B.K.Sharma, Chairman Raja Ram Mohan Roy Library Foundation. Eminent literature rate Mr. Sitesh Alok also was present on this occasion.
District Jail, Agra: 6th library was established at District Jail, Agra with 1500 books on 29th November 2017. The library was inaugurated by Shri Gaurav Dayal, IAS (District Magistrate Agra), Prof. G.C. Saxena, former Vice-Chancellor – Agra University and Faizabad University, Shri Sharad Kulshreshtha, DIG (Prison, Agra Range) and Dr. Harivansh Chaturvedi, Director BIMTECH and Dr. Rishi Tiwari, Secretary, RSSWLD.
District Jail, Etawah: 7th Library was established in District Jail, Etawah with 2000 books on 2nd April 2018. The inauguration observed in the presence of Dr. Harivansh Chaturvedi, Director, BIMTECH.
District Jail, Bulandsher: 8th Library Established in District Jail, Bulandsher. with 1600 books on 29th August 2018. The library was inaugurated by Shri. Anuj Kumar Jha, DM of Bulandshahr District, Dr. Anupam Varma, Deputy Director of BIMTECH, Shri Sanjeev Tripathi, D.I.G., Meerut, and Mr. Rajesh Kumar Pandey, Jailor.
District Jail, Gautam Budh Nagar (Female Wing), Greater Noida: 9th Library was Established in Greater Noida District Jail, Gautam Budh Nagar (female Wing) with 700 books.
District Jail, Firozabad: 10th Library was established in District Jail, Firozabad 1600 books. The library was inaugurated on 10th September 2018. by DM Neha Sharma, Senior Superintendent of Police; Prof. Manoj Pandey and Jail Superintendent Akram Khan.
District Jail, Mathura: 11th Library was established in District Jail, Mathura. Libraries started with 1600 books and was Inaugurated on 4th of January 2019 by Mr. Ram Niwas, IAS, Chief Development Officer, Mathura and Mr. A. K. Tripathi, DIG (Prisons), Agra. This library was financially sponsored by the Raja Ram Mohan Roy Foundation.
